Feelin’ near as faded as my jeans

We’re nearing the end of the road on this first leg of our trip. We had a late breakfast at The Donut Man in Glendora, where we watched a wayward honeybee crawl along the inside of the glass next to the doughnuts. The girl who waited on us said some people are disgusted by the presence of bees. I assured her that as beekeepers, we were not at all offended by the presence of our favorite species.

We cruised the Arroyo Seco Parkway and are now enjoying chili at Barney’s Beanery, where Janis Joplin is reputed to have eaten her last meal. I can think of worse places, though I suspect if the famous Pearl had ever stopped at Ike’s, she would have happily swapped L.A. for Tulsa. Still, it’s decent chili, and I like the hole-in-the-wall vibe that persists despite the fact that the place is obviously overrun with tourists.

Next stop: Lincoln and Olympic, then back to Pasadena to do some laundry at the Saga Motel and unwind. We press north on the Pacific Coast Highway tomorrow.

Hope you’re having a good week, wherever you are.
