Folk Thursday: Mavis Staples

Runners have a saying about marathons: “First you run 20 miles. Then you run the second half.”

A marathon is 26.2 miles long.

If race relations in the United States were a marathon, I’d say we crossed the 20-mile mark Tuesday night. But as every marathoner knows, 20 miles is still a long way from the finish line, and it’s in those later miles that error screams the loudest and you have to work the hardest to keep going.

Keep your eyes on the prize. Hold on.

Yes, we can.
