“The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.”
— Lao-tzu
A mile doesn’t sound like much — and, really, it isn’t — but it’s 85 degrees out right now, with 61 percent humidity, and I took Songdog with me. Last time I ran with Song, we went WAY farther than he should have gone without training, and he wound up wearing sores on his paw pads. I felt just terrible about it, and I obviously don’t want to do that to him again.
I do, however, enjoy running with him, and he really seems to be a natural athlete; he just needs a little conditioning, like any other athlete, so I’m going to sprinkle some shorter runs into my training over the next few weeks to give him a chance to catch up before I ask him for any long runs. Today was the beginning of his training program … and the second day of mine.
We were both pretty hot and tired when we finished, but we were still smiling, so it was a good run.
